Finding Strength on the Great Wall of China

C4B Media team members trekking the Great Wall of China for charity

Back in December 2024, I attended my very first corporate networking event hosted by the ACT team in Ely. I had no idea at the time that one evening would lead to one of the most life-changing experiences of my life.

As I walked into the venue, a banner promoting the Great Wall of China Trek immediately caught my eye. Something about it pulled me straight towards the ACT team to find out more. They encouraged me to attend an information evening the following February at The Old Bull Inn, Royston, which just so happened to be only a five-minute walk from the C4B offices. Looking back now, maybe it really was meant to be.

So along I went, joined by a few friends, and within moments we were signing up and planning our very first training walk.

What followed was a year filled with purpose, adventure and a renewed appreciation for being outdoors. Training for the trek became more than simply preparing physically – it became a way of life. I spent as much time in nature as possible, discovering incredible landscapes and creating unforgettable memories along the way.

From climbing Snowdon to exploring the mountains of Montenegro, walking the coastlines of Malta, hiking across the South Downs and breathing in the fresh air along the Norfolk coast, every location brought something different. Each walk challenged me in new ways and reminded me how important it is to slow down and appreciate the world around us.

Fast forward to 2026, and suddenly my dream trek, something I had wanted to do since I was eight years old, felt uncertain. After undergoing a small operation in March, I genuinely worried whether I would be able to travel. Thankfully, thanks to the incredible care from my local GP surgery and the swift surgical team at Stevenage Lister Hospital, I recovered quickly and was able to get back on track for the trip of a lifetime.

But just two days before departure, another emotional challenge arrived.

My twin sister, Sarah, who was also due to join the trek, was advised not to travel.

It was a huge blow. We had trained so hard together and had been counting down the days for months. The thought of doing it without her was tough. Yet when I boarded the plane to Beijing, I knew I was walking for more than just myself.

I carried three people with me throughout the journey.

Firstly, my niece Cerys, who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and has been cared for by Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Today, she is proudly part of the Cambridge Children’s Hospital Youth Forum, helping shape the future of the new hospital through her voice and experiences.

Secondly, my business partner and dear friend Julia, who sadly passed away in 2022. Julia dedicated over 20 years of her life working as a Matron at Addenbrooke’s while also receiving treatment there herself. She was an incredible woman who inspired so many people around her.

And finally, my sister Sarah, who couldn’t walk beside me physically but was with me in spirit every single step of the way.

The moment we landed in Beijing, all the fears and worries I had completely disappeared.

The Great Wall ACT team

I absolutely fell in love with China. From the breathtaking mountain views and ancient watchtowers to the demanding trekking days that tested both body and mind, every single moment felt special. Some sections of the Great Wall were beautifully restored, while others were wild, rugged and untouched. Standing there surrounded by history and silence was incredibly powerful.

What surprised me most was how quickly strangers became family.

Over seven unforgettable days, our group supported one another through every challenge. We laughed, encouraged each other during the tough climbs and celebrated every achievement together. The local team looking after us made us feel safe and cared for throughout the entire experience, and the food was simply incredible.

Even now, weeks after returning home, we are all still talking about how grateful we feel. Grateful for the friendships, the memories, the laughter and the reminder that joy can still be found in simply having fun and living in the moment.

But I will forever treasure the memories, the endless photos and, most importantly, the awareness and fundraising achieved by the entire team in support of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.

This journey changed me in ways I never expected.

And honestly?

I’m already looking forward to the next adventure.
